There are many wall painting ideas and techniques that allow you to liven up your residential painting space, but the inventive ideas suggested here by the local experts at DreamWalls Limerick, local paint providers, will give your interior an artistic ambiance.

Here are a few ideas to help you express yourself and create your intended dream space.

Color Washing: Color washing allows you to bring subtle color to walls by blending colors; it involves creating several layers of color, all of which are visible at once. In order to achieve this effect, there’s one base color, which is used to cover the entire wall. Over this basecoat, a thinner glaze color is applied, but not as a solid coat. This allows the basecoat color to show through to varying degrees, mottled with the glaze color. In some color washing projects, two or more different glaze colors are used. Color washing is a simple way to add a unique flavor to your home décor. At DreamWalls, we’ve had clients use color washing to achieve looks ranging from old-world to modern, from subtle to striking. The technique is popular with many residential painting contractors.

Dry-Brushing: This is a painting technique in which a paint brush that is relatively dry, but still holds paint, is used. It’s relatively simple and goes on quickly, but the results look like it took hours to create! At DreamWalls, the load is applied to a dry support such as paper or primed canvas first. The resulting brush strokes we produce have a characteristic scratchy look that lacks the smooth appearance that washes or blended paint generally have.

Fresco: Fresco is a technique of mural painting. The surface is typically a plastered wall or ceiling. The liquid paint is absorbed by the plaster and as the plaster dries the pigments are retained in the wall. Executed upon freshly-laid or wet lime plaster, water is used as the vehicle for the pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall. The fresco technique has been used since antiquity and is obviously associated with Italian Renaissance painting. DreamWalls Limerick likes to work with clients beforehand to ensure a well-thought-out design is prepared beforehand, as the medium does not permit experimentation or changes in drawing. Light, space, air and architecture are all determining factors in how the fresco will be painted. It’s important that the carrying power of the wall fresco be experienced in the actual setting.

Smooshing: The smooshing technique is a messy, easy faux to apply. Even so it can require another person helping for the job to go smoothly. This finish is popular with many of our clients due to its ease and the short amount of time it takes us to complete. The wall design created will have the ability to not look dated like some other faux techniques can. Doing this finish on your own is possible but you will need to work fast to keep the plastic from sticking to the walls. Smooshing will give you kind of a marble-like finish. The smooshing finish is a predominantly mild technique, but with the application of strongly contrasting colors, it can create a vivid conversation piece.

Sponging: Here at our specialist interior painters, sponge painting is a quick, simple way to make dull interior walls dramatic, and a quick and easy way to achieve a subtle texture and add depth to any wall. It’s oft-recommended because many underestimate the complexity that can be added and the amazing aesthetic you’ll have afterward. You can even add visual punch to a plain-color wall with sponging yourself. And if you mess up, it’s easy to fix less-than-perfect spots. With just a sponge, a can of glaze and a few paint colors you can transform your entire house if you wish (or, have us do it!). Even though we’re saying paint, we’re actually using glaze. In order to get a smooth look on your wall, you must keep smooshing the sponge around, but take care to lift it up after each time you touch the surface. The whole idea of this technique is for it to be very consistent and to present an even finish.

Washed stripes: Give any room a light and sophisticated style with subtle wall stripes, which add a touch of texture and sheen for a soft, subtle look. We find that this classic, elegant style goes well with pale-toned furnishings and rich fabrics or with luxurious accents such as large pillows and lush window treatments. Horizontal stripes make a room appear more spacious; vertical stripes make the ceiling appear higher. A subtle striping technique, with alternating flat and glossy stripes, can add perceived dimension to a room. Washed stripes as a wall painting idea or technique are classic and elegant; they never go out of style.
